The Dungeon Bjj Sunderland

The Dungeon Bjj is one of the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the North East. Founded by Sunderland’s first Black Belt, Aaron Naisbett. Aaron has been teaching since 2005 and helping to create some of the best fighters and athletes that the region has to offer.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be used for self defence, competition or as social activity enjoyed by friends. As martial art, Bjj focuses on taking an opponent to the ground where leverage and technique can help overcome size and strength. Using a step by step system, a Bjj practitioner finishes the fight by using a submission joint lock or strangle.

When Mitsuyo Maeda arrived in Brazil in 1915 he taught Judo and Jiu Jitsu to new Brazilian students. Three of these students would go on to further develop this art and create Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Carlos and Helio Gracie and Luiz França continued to refine the style through teaching and real world fights to ensure that their martial art was perfected.

It in the early 1990’s when the first UFC was aired that forced the whole world to see that many peoples view of what a ‘real’ fight was. When Royce Gracie submitted all of his opponents, despite not being the biggest fighter, it was a wake up call that Brazilian jiu jitsu was an important skill to learn to defend oneself.

ADULT BJJ CLASSES

Inside the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, our emphasis is to practice in a safe and controlled environment. We train Bjj daily with a focus to improve ourselves and our teammates trying to eliminate the fear of accidents or injuries. All risks cannot be eradicated from a contact sport. The majority of students training do so as a hobby/interest and study grappling for a host of benefits other than learning to defend oneself.

Aaron has assembled a great team at the Dungeon over the years with a great emphasis on team camaraderie and teaches most classes himself with support from his friends who he has taught from white belt to black belt. The Dungeon was the first and the oldest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in the City of Sunderland.

Dungeon Bjj classes are truly an enjoyable place to train, develop your skills, and grow as a valued team member among like-minded practitioners of the sport, ranging from people who enjoy the hobby, Bjj competitors to amateur and professional fighters, we all learn, train and improve together.

We have six Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes a week at the academy. They feature a warm-up, followed by drills, then we learn how to take the training to the floor by either, throw, takedown or a guard-pulling method. Then technique's on the ground. All these techniques are fully demonstrated and explained. The students then practice the techniques with a partner, After this students can roll live with a variety of partners "no pressure is put on new students to roll"

.

Classes can be a very demanding workout although you can train at your own pace. Bjj is not only physical but also very cerebral having to overcome problems and deal with strategies. Come down to the academy, take a look at a class, or better yet, take a Free trial class.

We are very confident that if you try Jiu-Jitsu, you will find it very enjoyable and a workout that covers multifaceted fitness aspects, cardio, strength, and flexibility. It will also give you confidence, self-defense, and lessons that you can carry into everyday life and situations that few people will ever experience. You will walk out the door better than you walked in.
